An Ignatian Prayer

ignatius An Ignatian Prayer

I ran across this prayer by Ignatius the other day. It impacted me, and I want to share it with you.

Lord, teach me to be generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve;
to give and not to count the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek for rest,
to labor and not to ask for reward,
save that of knowing that I do your will.

What is the toughest part of this prayer to pray? What part of this prayer have you been praying and living these days?

    I absolutely love this prayer. We would pray it at my high school (a Jesuit school) and it was so powerful. Although these are difficult words to live by, they are so moving and thought provoking. I think the hardest part is giving without counting the cost and laboring without seeking a reward. It is so easy to compare what you are doing to what others are doing. Moreover, we all want to feel as if our time and work are valued and appreciated; therefore, laboring without reward is equally difficult. The two parts that I always go back to are serving God as He deserves and the joy that comes from know that you do His will.

    to give and not to count the cost, – I think this is the hardest for me. I was balancing the budget for January, and for some reason, we had a lot more money than we usually do. After two minutes of looking for the expenditure, I forgot about tithing!!!

    Not that I was frustrated or disappointed; I want to give the Lord his. But I can't help but to think, "what could I do with that money *now*?" I have to pray and ask that He show me how he can multiply it and do much greater than I could with my own hands.

    One thing that we can rejoice in, though, is that technically, we are over budget every month, but we want for nothing, and all the bills get paid. Perhaps that is a testament to how He has blessed us?IDK…

    Man, keep pressing into the Lord. I am praying for you and your family as you all pursue Him.
